Snapping tie rods?

A friend's father had a tie rod snap on him this week. '00 2WD CC, 62K
on it. All I know is that the tie rod broke on the road (rough road).
Fortunately, he didn't have an accident as a result. I think this is
the first I've heard of this happening on a Dak. Any thoughts on
how/why it may have happened? My friend says the truck is babied.

And he was 1 payment away from having it paid off. Obviously out of
warranty, but still...
