Subject: DML: Follow-up to: Vibration in Chassis

<So did an out of balance shaft do damage to the diff or was it the early
years of pulling a trailer full of dirt bikes around the country for
250000km do it?>

An out of balance drive shaft will cause premature wear on the pinion
bearing in the nose of the differential.
The bearing should get noisy enough to be noticeable before the wear causes
a shift in the ring and pinion contact pattern.
The major causes of accelerated gear wear are: bad set-up on the contact
pattern, lubrication failure (as in not enough oil or dirt in the oil), or
torque loads way in excess of the ability of the oil to provide adequate
lubrication.
It's hard to imagine towing motorcycles would cause that much wear unless
you were pulling 5,000 pounds of them on a regular basis.
