Well, after a weekend of helping my uncle and hauling his 6' x 16'
trailer around loaded with this and that including cars and railroad ties, I
had gotten completely disgusted with my weak rear springs, not evening
performing at stock levels..
My uncle and I did some scrounging in his garage and found a set of
1200# coil overloads that mount to the axle next to the leaf springs..
These came off his '84 Dodge Prospector 4x4 Custom that he ordered with a
360 and 4.56 gears. Well, a new set of 3" exhaust U-bolts and a jack to
each side gave me a much stiffer ride and I can now load a trailer and not
slam to the ground. Im figuring between my worn out half ton suspension and
these I'm probably setting right about 3/4 ton or so for weght capacity, FOR
FREE!! WOOHOO!! Thank god for Dodge lovers in the family.
Anyway, now the assend sits up about 2 1/2" taller(maybe more, at
McyD's, I parked next to a 2001 4x4 and my rear bumper bottom sat exactly at
his rear bumper top) than the front and I am certain that my front suspesion
is just old and weak even though there is nothing visibly wrong. Other than
the need of an alignment would giving my torsion bars a full turn give it
enough to level out a bit and some sturdiness back into the front
suspsension? or a big waste of time? Since most of you already now what my
plans for this truck are SAS and a 318, I really don't want to dump a bunch
of money on suspsension items to get it back up where it should be.
The second question deals with my motor swap. I only want a 5.2 318, so
the final year that was made for rams and Dakots was 2001? If so will the
RAM computer work in the DAK for that 318 or will I need to purchase one for
a DAK? Also, the V8 in Cherokees.. was that a 318? Will it bolt to my
tranny? Will the computer work?
Thanks for the input ont hese guys and sorry for the length.
