Need help fixing so I can get a new Dak (kind long)

Hey everybody,

I've found a 97 Dak I might be able to pick up REALLY cheap for my soon-to-be wife to drive. I need some help trying to figure out what might be wrong with it as she says I have to be able to get it running properly before I can buy it.

Its a 97 5.2 auto 4x4 Dak with 93K. Problem is it runs sluggishly. Idles fine, but anytime you give it some gas more than 1/4 throttle at the time, it bogs down and the exhaust changed to a flatter tone like something is clogging the pipe. Its hard to get over 3k rpms. You can get up to interstate speeds, but if you hit a hill, you're lucky to keep it over 45. Some days it acts worse, some better.

Today I disconnected the exhaust at the headers to isolate the cat thinking it was clogged, but it still ran sluggishly. Maybe it was one of the better days, but it ran a bit better (was able to reach 5k), but the exhaust tone was still evident even with open headers, and you could feel it was still sluggish. I hooked everything back up, then ran home without the airhat on thinking maybe the air intake was clogged (bad chipmunk year). Once again, ran a little better, even keeping up in the highway, but still with an obvious sluggishness.

Any ideas here? I'm thinking fuel pump, but I want to check fuel pressure before putting the money in a pump. Maybe just the filter is clogged? The #1 O2 sensor was replaced 3 months ago, and there are no other signs the cat is clogged. Any help here is appreciated as it will get a Dak back in the family if I can get this problem solved.

Thanks,
Mike Styer
