Sounds like you might just as well trade it in on one that already has the
transmission you want. A few years ago I was researching a V8 swap
(engine, then tranny, then computer, then wiring, then torsion bars, and
so on) in mine and came to a similar conclusion. Plus, I realized that
after I put all that work and expense in to it, I'd still have no A/C and
a 5-speed. I'd rather trade it for a lower mileage truck with a V8
already in it and get the creature comforts as a bonus (yeah, I've been
spoiled by the Quad).

Of course, in my case, since I'm mechanically inept, I also had to figure
in costs of finding someone to help me with the work, and also a rental
car to drive to work while it was in process. That part probably doesn't
apply to you, but it's worth keeping in mind that you can always change
the entire truck and save a lot of hassle. Just a thought.
