If you were looking forward to the trip, then YOU
should go.
If they know you are out of work right now, and they
are employed, what is the big deal if they pick up the
tabs this time. Especially since they invited
themselves along!! I mean, that's what friends do,
right? Help each other out in tough times?

I would never expect a friend who is out of work to
pay like that, especially if he's providing something
(whether it costs him $$ or not) like a hotel room.
(those points didn't magically appear, you had to
spend money somewhere to aquire them) If you're
providing the lodging, then they can provide the
transportation.

If you decide to talk to him, explain what your
original plans were. Explain that you were going "on
the cheap" because that is the only way you can afford
it at this time. Personally, I don't think I'd even
bother calling him back. What an asshole.
