Hmmmm, how would you prove that the filter caused the damage? Let's say
that you used a Fram and the anti-drain back valve was defective. Not
uncommon in my experience; I worked for a Dana for 5 years and we tested
competitors products.

You would get increased wear on startup and knocking until the oil
pressure came back up. But it's very unlikely that there would be a
catastrophic failure that you could blame the filter for. In fact you
would probably be blamed for driving the car hard or not changing the
oil as often as specified. Not much you could do in this situation.
