   I suppose it could be either, depending on wether it is a bearing
going bad, etc. Does putting the truck in neutral and/or pushing in
the clutch change the sound at all? If it does, that would tend to
make me think its the transmission, but even if there is no change in
the sound, that doesn't completely eliminate the trans. Perhaps
putting the truck on a lift or putting the rear up on jack stands so
that you can run the truck in various gears while you listen to
various driveline parts with a mechanic's stethescope could narrow
it down. (That would be safer with a buddy in the truck to hit the
brakes in the event of a problem, obviously...)
