Re: Tranfer case Fluid

I am running Mobel 1 synthetic ATF in the transfer case of my 99 4x4 Dakota.

FWIW, I wouldn't put much stock in what a Haynes or Chilton manual states.
These manuals cover several years worth of vehicles and do not necessarily
reflect what your vehicle specifically requires. The owners manual would be the
best place for recomendations or a Factory Service Manual.

BTW, for a 99 Dakota transfer case the recomended fluid is Mopar 7176 which is
ATF+3. The Mobil 1 stuff does not meet +3 specs but I believe the only reason
ATF is spec'd at all in the transfer case is to consolidate what they need to
have available on the manufacturing line. In any case I feel comfortable that
the Mobil 1 is a better lubricating fluid than ATF+3, it just doesn't have the
friction modifiers that a Mopar tranny needs and aren't required in a transfer
case. Likely one of the synthetic manual transmission fluids would be a better
choice.
