Thanks again for the advise. :)

I did try the running adjustment, but when you said 'a little messy' you
were definately understating it. I had lots of oil and smoke from it
hitting the headers. Wow. I did just a few on each side before I decided
it wasn't worth it. I decided I was close enough with the adjustments so I
buttoned everything up and went for a drive. I put about 70 miles on it and
all unusual noises have gone away. I'm happy with that. There's only a
couple of things that are still bothering me. A couple of times when first
starting up, I'd hear a squeal like a belt was slipping. The only thing is
that it seemed to be coming from the rockers. After putting a few miles on
it didn't happen the couple of times I restarted it, but I'll be paying
attention to that. Also, the truck starts harder now. It's almost like my
compression is higher. When I turn the key, there's an initial pause, then
the engine spins over slowly, then fires. I'll probably get a new battery
to make sure nothing is wrong with it, but it seems coincidental to my
changes. Could it be that much more difficult to crank over that it would
affect it in this way? Is this, also, something that has to work itself
out?
Thanks again for any tips,
Mark
