As has been illustrated to me by my current employer many times now, if
you aren't actively engaged in bringing money into the company, you are
an expense. If the company would be lost w/o the services your
department provides (IT), they don't even consider that. Revenue isn't
directly the result of your activities, therefore you aren't positively
contributing to the bottom line - you're hurting it.

Cheaper to fire a $60K employee every 2 years and replace him w/ someone
you're paying $45K for the same job (or, bring in no replacement, and
just put more load on those who remain) than to keep that $60K employee

Maybe you were looking into it for the wrong reasons. If you were
swayed from it just because the bubble burst, I don't think you would
have been happy long-term in that career.
