Definitely replace the bushing. An excessive amount of play on the shaft
can also destroy the pickup.

It "sounds" normal, but I will check for compression when cranking when I
have some time on Saturday evening.

Your list coincides with my list of things to check on. Another thing, I've
been having problems with my motor chewing through distributor rotors (like
6 mos or less,) and I've already developed a large amount of side to side
play in a dealer reman distributor after a little over a year. Thinking
that while I have the thing laid up, I should replace the dist drive
bushing?

Lesson learned, master Jedi... ;)
