: Hi James - I use the Right Stuff on just about everything. I use it on
: differential covers, I've used it on valve covers and oil pans. For the oil
: pan I still used the cork peices - but for the valve covers I used only the
: right stuff - I got sick of cork gaskets with RTV, blowing out and leaking.

: gasket surfaces with imperfections in them.
: Why do you need to use the RTV on all those gaskets?
All those? The only gaskets Tom mentioned were the valve covers
and oil pan. (And the diff covers, but you agreed with him on those.)
: Even at the
: dealership, we never use RTV on the Waterpump, Timing Cover, Valve Covers
: (not required with the rubber gaskets), Oil Pan...we only use the Mopar
: Gasket Sealer Spray (light coating to hold them in place). Have had no
: leaks at all.
I can't speak for Tom, but I've used RTV on oil pans and valve
covers. Why? Mostly because I don't get paid to tear the engine
back down to fix a leak. I want to put it together once. There
are also a lot of variables from engine to engine. Keep in mind
that Tom is working on a premag - he probably doesn't have the
fancy rubber Magnum valve cover gaskets in there. As far as my
own truck goes, I'm using LA valve covers on my Magnum which needed
a bit of RTV to seal. Not to mention the Cuda which has a 37 year
old motor in it; unless there is a good reason not to (i.e. cylinder
heads), when I'm putting on water pumps, timing covers, pretty much
anything, I will use a thin layer of RTV to fill any imperfections
and greatly increase the odds for a leak proof seal. Its cheap
insurance.
