   Bill,

Do you think there's any chance the dealership you bought your Dak
from would locate the VIN of the other Dak for you? If you can get the
VIN, there are a couple of routes you can take. One is to have a dealer
pull a VIP report on that VIN, which will include the name, address, and
sometimes phone number of the original purchaser. You can contact the
purchaser and try to follow down the line of subsequent owners. If
the truck had a warranty on it and it changed hands, the dealership
might have a record of the new owner too, I'm not sure. If so, that might
save you from having to start right at the very first owner. The
other alternative is to run a carfax report on it, to find out what state
it was last registered in. Depending on the laws of that state, you may
be able to purchase a report from that state's DMV which will allow you
to use the truck's VIN to track down the current registrant.

Its going to be difficult if you can't get ahold of that VIN
number. I don't know anything about how vehicles get sequenced to
be built, but since the orders for the trucks were placed at the
same time and since they are identical, do you suppose there is any
chance they were built sequentially on the line? If so, the other
truck's VIN would differ from yours only in the sequence number
(the last 6 digits of the VIN) being one number higher or lower
than yours, and the 9th digit would also be different since it is
a checksum that is computed from the other digits.

It might be worthwhile to just give that a shot - take your VIN,
increase the sequence number by one, re-compute the check digit,
then do the same except decreasing the sequence number by one, then
take those two VINs and run a carfax/autocheck on them. See if their
first registration was in the Carolinas. If so, you might be on
the right track... Info about how to compute the check digit can
be found here: http://www.dakota-truck.net/VIN/9/info.txt (Or an
easier method would be to just run the two "new" VINs through the
VIN Decoder at http://www.dakota-truck.net/vin with any old garbage
character at position 9, and the decoder will tell you what the check
digit should be.)

In this age of increased paranoia and privacy rights, I fear
you are fighting an uphill battle, but I wish you the best of luck
in your search!
