Just about all autolite plugs come that way. Why? I have no clue.
Maybe a cost saving factor. Costs less money to throw a washer in the
box than to use a machine to do it or pay a human to put washers on the
plugs

NGK plugs have a very good reputation and are generally used in imports
more than domestics. Most ATVs and snowmobiles run NGK plugs.
