Empty oil filter??

Here's an odd one. I was out tinkering with Christine a little, and
decided to change the oil filter while I was under there. I spun it off
cautiously, expecting an oil bath... but nothing... looking inside the
filter, it was empty. Not totally bone dry, but I could see the
"bottom" of the filter through the hole. It was not covered with oil at
all. If I had not known better I would have said it spent a month
upside down, draining out. The engine has not been started since a few
days before the Colorado trip. The filter does not mount upside down or
sideways on these engines, how could it have been dry? Only thing I can
think of that I've done differently with this engine than from the
others, is this has a melling high flow/volume oil pump... doesn't seem
like that would cause the filter to empty? Or does it?
