Not a new study, it came out earlier this year. Here's the original
http://cnwmr.com/nss-folder/automotiveenergy/
Short version is at http://www.fsguk.com/news/post/id/155 . At the time
of the study, the Wrangler was actually the 3rd-best vehicle in terms of
lifetime energy efficiency, beaten only by the Scion xB and Ford Escort.
The Neon even made the top 10.
The topic also came up on my Subaru forum and I pulled up the same study
to refute a poster's wife's claims that a hybrid was "good" for the
environment. In fact, those batteries are an environmental nightmare,
and the overall energy cost of a hybrid over its lifetime is far, far
higher than a conventional vehicle. Over the typical 5 years of
ownership, of the "big 5" hybrids on the market this spring, only ONE
costs less than an equivalent gas-only car - the Prius, and the
difference was less than $600.

Like I said on the Subaru forum, I like the /idea/ of hybrids, but until
some massive breakthrough comes along, stick with conventional cars.
