No guess work at all - It would never get "new" fluid as the old fluid, at
the next pan drop, would already contaminated and your just adding new fluid
to old.

If you service the transmission on regular intervals, there really isn't a
problem with either method.

Now as to the original post on the Jeep 42RE - drop the pan, check/adjust
the bands, change the filter, and refill with ATF+4. Go from there...as it
was noted - if it's going to fail, it will (regardless of flusing or
fluid/filter changes). If all works after the fluid/filter change - drive
it a little while and then flush it.

So, for the anal among us, how many Changes does it take to get, say 90%
new fluid into the tranny? For example if I were to change my tranny
fluid [just the fluid] at my next 3 oil changes, how much good and how
much bad might I have? I realize this is a theoretical question
involving guesswork, but I am still wondering...
