piston slap?

I have a '93 2.5 (not the Jeep 2.5) that clatters quite noticeably on
cold startup. I "bought" this vehicle as a non-runner with a
cracked/warped head and blown head gasket from overheating. I put a
$199 (cheap) reman head on it, tossed the balance shafts, and replaced
the rod bearings, oil pump, and radiator. When I gave it to my parents,
the noise was much less apparent and was almost totally gone when warm
but the noise has gotten worse over the last year or so. This noise
sounds a lot like lifter noise. When warm, it quiets down considerably
and sounds like a happy little diesel. It doesn't have the "THOCK!
THOCK! THOCK! THOCK! THOCK!" of a bad rod bearing. A bad bearing or
wrist pin would have caused the engine to grenade long ago, right?
Piston slap generally gets quieter when the engine warms up, right? I
just need somebody to confirm my suspicions.

Tim
