Everybody is welcome to do it the way they prefer of course, but on
my truck (and whenever I'm working on somebody else's) I always
disconnect the negative battery cable prior to unplugging the PCM.
The FSM recommends that the battery not be connected when removing or
installing the PCM to avoid the possibility of voltage spikes which
could damage the electronics.
So, to clear a code, I'd definitely go the "disconnect the battery,
turn key to start" route. Its easier that way on my truck anyway,
since I have a quick disconnect on the negative battery terminal.
