I just wanted to fire off a quick message because I know some folks
are getting ready to leave pretty soon for the DML BBQ, and I wanted
to give a little flood related update.
I assume that most people will be exiting from the I-90 at the
Silver Creek exit (#58 I believe). Everything should be relatively
normal there as you take the exit ramp and head west on Routes 5&20,
and then turn left at the light at Alleghany Road. Once you get to
the end of the road though (where the cemetery is in front of you and
you need to turn left) you may notice that there is a "road closed"
sign there to prevent you from turning left. Ignore it and turn left
anyway, just drive around the sign. Within several hundred feet you
will get to that bridge just before King Road (at the general store).
Turn right there as usual. You will probably see another "road
closed" sign in front of you and you will see that it is because of a
partially washed out road and there is a tree and telephone pole
leaning over the road. The roadblock is set up so that you can drive
around it, and you should do that. Just be careful though, use your
judgement - there is a tree leaning on the power line there so its
possible the situation could change by the time you get here. It
might have been cleaned up by then, the power line might have fallen
into the road by then, or it might be the same as it is now - the road
crews certainly have their hands full. (If it is impassible, you
can always go around and come at DML HQ from the other direction.)
After you go past that road closed sign, you will head up a hill and
down on the other side. At the bottom of that hill there is a bunch
of gravel that got washed into the road. Its not anything that would
pose a challenge to a 4x4 or even most passenger cars, but if you hit
it any faster than 20mph or so it could really rattle your teeth. :-)
Again, that might be scraped away by then, but I mention it just in
case. Often times, folks show up at night so it could surprise you.
Well, I've got to get back to cleaning up the barn - its gone from
totally trashed to partially trashed so I've still got some work to
do. If I finish that up today I can hopefully make a run into town
tomorrow for some BBQ food supplies.
Have a safe trip!
