Hi all,
I have been having some problems with my 88 Dakota V-6 3.9L motor that I
could use some input on. Any help would be appreciated.
It does not want to idle at stop lights, and often will die when you push
in the clutch when coming up to a stop.
Sometimes it runs really smooth at highway speeds, then out of the blue it
will start surging or rather cutting out and acts as if it is not getting
fuel. I am sometimes forced to pull over and keep trying to pump the pedal
until the problem stops and I can resume my driving.
Sometimes the thing will act as if it is starved for fuel and I can not
accelerate from a stop. then just as suddenly, it will be fine and off I
go.
I have replaced the fuel filter, removed the carburetor and cleaned out all
the fuel passages. I have dumped two or three cans of injector cleaner into
the tank and filled it each time, as per the instructions, but my problem
still continues.
Upon removal I inspected the fuel injectors, one appeared to be shinny
clean the other looked as if it had some tarnish in the injector port. I
cleaned it out and reinstalled them. Although they both appeared to the eye
to be injecting the same amount of fuel, The problem continues.
I have removed the fuel tank and cleaned it out, blew out all the fuel
lines with an air hose then reassembled everything, my efforts were to no
avail and made no difference.
I had someone crank on the engine while I held my finger over the incoming
fuel line after disconnecting it from the carburetor and felt very little
pressure, although it would pump fuel into a bottle. What should the fuel
pressure be? And how can I test it?
Although there is a lot of stuff inside of the fuel tank, including a
little green ball "What the hell is that for", I don't remember seeing what
looked like a fuel pump inside of there, And I don't see what looks like
one on the side of the engine block, from the top anyhow. Where is it?
Any suggestions? Help will certainly be appreciated,
