For sure... If you need to test a different automobile, you just have
to buy another software package, rather than a whole 'nother system. Or,
some high end software will probably be able to diagnose a bunch of cars.
(i.e. All Mopars, all domestic cars, etc)

Sounds like a good idea to me too... Probably too practical to ever
go into practice though. :P Taking this idea a step further, why not
let the user reprogram various systems through the same interface? Plug
in your laptop to check on the status of your catalitic converter, and
while you're in there, adjust the timing, and play around with the chip
a bit, all from the keyboard. This could also eliminate all those
replacement chip manufacturers. Immagine this: Drive out to the strip,
stop in the parking lot, boot up the laptop, load a previously saved
configuration off disk into the chip, shut off the laptop, drive out
onto the strip and run fast 1/4 miles all day. Before heading home,
reload the more gas efficient settings. If swapping the Dakota's
computer in 15 minutes is considered fast, how about being able to
do it with a few keystrokes, without ever having to leave the cab?
I like it! =)
