exhaust rust

Well in feb i noticed that the tailpipe and muffler connection was starting
to rust pretty bad; I promptley forgot about it. Today while washing my
dakota (92 v-6 club cab) the spray hit the tailpipe and it basically swayed
all over. I moved the truck to a dry spot and cralwed under; the muffler
has rusted through the rear bottom and the tailpipe (right after the
connection to the muffler where the sharp bend is) is rusted away except for
about an inch of metal on the top. Except that one area at the back of the
muffler everywhere else on the exhaust barely has any rust on it.

Well now for the question. Lets just say for this question that I'm a
college kid working for the summer making peanuts to save up spending money
for the next school year, insurance, and taxes. So basically my question
is whats the most cost effecient way to:
        1. fix everything,
        2. achive the same or better performance
        3. leave the possibility of adding better performance latter (when I
have money to spare, hopefully next year) without having to replace
             everything I've put in new

I'll do the work myself.
Thanks for any responses.
