I've heard of Chrysler really messing up and shipping diffs with, get this,
the rear end ring and pinion -- up front!!! When you slip into 4WD, the front
wants to go backwards, the rear forwards -- yikes!. So it's not beyond the
realm of possibility they set up the pinion clearance wrong and your gears
are barely engaged. Whatever it is, take it back to the dealer, describe the
problem and get them to write this on your service ticket so that if it leads
to serious work down the road, you're covered under warranty.
BTW, it can be a little tough to get a spanking new xfer case into low range.
To do it, shift to Neutral on the tranny and yank hard on the xfer shifter.
