Don't think it's a common problem with Dakotas, my '92's on the original
battery at 70+k miles. Has the alternator been checked? It's possible
that the alternator could have died, but that shouldn't be a problem yet.
If the battery posts and cable ends are not immaculately shiny clean you
won't get the charge to the battery either.
