Re: What a bag of Worms [was: K&N Clone]

Been having email problems here so I don't know if this will even make
it out of the building, but.....

I've only caught a couple of messages in the last 4 days. Can't seem
to ftp any archives either. Since this message came through I'd
thought I'd throw in my two cents.

     I'm noticing a few of the Edelbrock/K&N e-1080 combos going on '97's
now. I don't know if I actually started this or not. I do have to
side with those that are noticing a definite improvement in power.
The only way the stock air box could outflow this FIPK clone is if a
second duct was added and you plumbed it straight to the front of the
vehicle so it was directly in the path of incoming air. The problem
with such 'ram-air' systems, usually because they're routed under the
front bumper, are they suck up every leaf and puddle that comes along.
I don't have to tell ya that this is a baaaad thing.

John mentioned that he didn't know the particulars on the sensor, etc.
It can be simplied as: The computer reads how much air in entering
the engine. It then knows based on the amount of incoming air,
throttle position, speed, rpm, etc. how long to cycle the injectors
for the correct amount of fuel. When you increase the amount of
usable air coming into the engine (even if its slightly warmer) the
computer is gonna compensate and BINGO, more power. The same goes for
the exhaust.....remove a bottle neck, more air can flow through the
     system and BINGO, more power.

Ok, I'm ramblin'...especially since this probably won't leave the
building. :( The bottom line is the factory airbox is restrictive.
By eliminating the restriction you gain horsepower. How much? Don't
know. No dyno commercial dyno here in Detroit area that I know of.
By the seat-o-th-pants meter I'd say at least 10 horse. This mod is
worth WAY more than the $50 it costs to do.

     Again, just my $0.02.

By the way, if anyone has tried to email me directly, I'm not ignoring
the mail. I'm just plain not getting it. I can't wait to get set up
at home. ;) Should be about 3 weeks.

Boy, do we have some opinions here!!!!!!!!!!

From my own experience, '97, 5.2L, Clone FIPK, with K&N E-1080 filter. The
removal of the CC installed, god-awful, air snorkel hold down assembly, and
the installation of the FIPK made a world of difference in noticeable
difference in torque, in 5th gear (up hills, etc.) Don't know all the
technical particulars related to air flow, sensors, computer, but the system
DOES work better.

Thought of an old article that I remember from one of the car magazines
back in the muscle car era, testing so called RAM-AIR systems. The best
system from the test if I recall correctly was the AIR-GRABBER on the '70
RR. Actually made a very noticeable performance difference. Low air drag,
located optimum location, brought in cooler outside air, sealed to open
element air box, and when connected to 1240 cfm sucking HEMI
.........WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....................
