3.55 means that the rear axles will turn 3.55 times per one turn of the drive
shaft, I tink. and the 3.90 will be 3.9 times per turn of the drive shaft.
Any how the higher the number the lower the gear ratio thus a 3.90 would have
more pulling power than the 3.55. I have the 3.90 with Sure Grip Dif (posi
traction) and Auto and would go no other way. With the 5 speed and their low
4.01 first gear the 3.9 may not be as useful ?? My experience is that if you
live any where that has any thing but level roads then the 3.9 are a blessing
and could actually give better mileage than high gears due to the less strain
and shifting necessary to get up and down the knolls.

Bill-

Actually, I believe it is 3.90 or 3.55 turns of the drive shaft to 1 turn of
the axle. If you think about it, you would want the drive shaft to turn at a
higher speed then the wheels, this is how your engine gets the mechanical
advantage.
Think of a 10 speed bicycle, you get the higher torque when you put the chain
on the smaller cog in the front and the larger in the back. This causes your
feet to spin faster, but you move much easier.
