Cowl induction hoods: All show?

If I remember correctly, someone mentioned this topic a while back, but
unfortunately, searching is not available at the moment on the Dakota
archives. (the puny machine they are on can't handle the system drain.)

Anyway, I was wondering if a cowl induction hood will bring cool air into
the engine bay? The reason I ask: Bill Tierney has a neat ram air setup
on his Dak that sucks cool air in from underneath the air dam. I think the
'96 Daks have a different air can and to do something like this would
require cutting into it, etc. More hassle than I'd like... So, I'm
planning on going the FABM route, but a big concern is that all the air
will be hot, right from the engine. So, how do I get cool air to the air
cleaner?

I could put a hood scoop on there, but I'm not real keen on cutting up
my hood. I suspect that a scoop would also have a significant impact on
the truck's drag. Someone posted earlier that fiberglass cowl induction
hoods were available for pre '97 Daks. They cost about 3x as much as a
hood scoop, but there's a lot less work involved. There's no point in
getting one if they're not going to give the engine cold air though. Do
cowl induction hoods work, or are they just for show?

Also, any thoughts on painting the fiberglass? I'd probably have it
done by a professional because I don't trust myself. Can it be painted to
match my paint job? Would it have to be clearcoated in order for it to
match? I'd prefer if it didn't stick out like a sore thumb. :-) (Any
thoughts as to how much such a paint job should cost?)

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!
