Anyway, I was wondering if a cowl induction hood will bring cool air =
into
the engine bay? Do cowl induction hoods work, or are they just for show?
<more snips>
Absolutely they work! Because you're getting air from the high presure =
area at the base of the windshield which is outside. It does seem weird =
that air can't flow in the opposite direct of truck travel but that's =
the beauty of induction at the base of the windshield. It's more =
effective than a RAM air setup since it has a larger area to work with =
collecting air. Now here's the real kicker. Wilst restoring a '71 =
Javelin SST with cowl induction, I wanted to get a colder air charge =
into my '72 Dart Swinger's engine. But I didn't want anyone to know I =
had a setup. That and I don't like cutting up hoods either or having to =
get the 'glass shell and use the metal frame from a metal hood to =
support it. A real hassle. I solved the problem by cutting two oval =
holes in the air box at the base of the windshield where your heater and =
A/C get the "fresh air" into your cab. By tapping into an already =
installed induction system, I had all I needed to get the coldest air =
charge I could get. Rain and snow and sleet weren't a problem since the =
holes were cut midway between the top and bottom of the airbox. After =
that, I used a dual snorkel can and viola! Air induction sleeper style. =
Later I added air motors to control their opening so I wouldn't lean =
the mixture out all the time. After installing them, my gas mileage =
went back to where it was but gave me more power when I needed it. The =
air motors are the same ones that operate the RAM Air on the '71-72 Mach =
1 Mustang. Gotta fiddle with the tuning some so they start opening at =
the right vacuum level. The air motors are open when there's no vacuum =
and closed at idle. Mine started opening around 8" of Hg so they would =
open when starting off but closed while cruising. I installed a bypass =
air switch so I could keep them open all the time the engine was =
running.
