Using 4HI on pavement

Is it ok to drive in 4Hi on pavement? It seems to be ok and all 4 tires grab
like heck when pulling out in traffic, its great. I know better than to drop
down into 4L and be on sticky surfaces but what is the difference as far as
what is engaging in the drivetrain when someone goes into 4H/4L?
