My dad used to haul cars for GM (Camaros and TAs from CA) and he recounts
an instance when the dealer told a guy that his brand new Z28 or whatever
was going to be delivered on a certain day .
The guy was at the dealership when the truck pulled in with it .
What happened was that the car was situated underneath and behind another
vehicle that had come loose in transport which caused it to really beat the
hell out of the guys car . The hood was dented all to hell , the wishield
was gone , the roof was really bad too .
The guy saw the mangled car and asked in horror if it was his .
The salesman that sold him the car quickly replied that no , it wasn't ,
that his was delayed after all .
After the guy left , the dealership , under orders from GM , had the car in
the body shop and fixed it as much as possible (couldn't really tell it had
been wrecked) and then called the guy up and told him his car was there .
He came down , looked at it real close and then drove it home , totally
unaware that it was just about totaled on the truck that had brought it
there .
That's why when you see these things on a carrier , they are chained down
so tightly , that they squat all the way down on the suspension .
If they move at all , there is a very good chance that they will bounce
around enough to do some damage not only to one car , but many since the
cars are situated very tightly on a car carrier .
He also told me about how they sometimes have to get a good running start
to get them on the very top of the truck .
He said that one guy was trying to get a TA on the top level all the way in
the front , but because of the ohter vehicles he had , he had to make sure
it was on the truck backwards .
The guy got a very long running start , and while attempting to get on the
truck at about 25-30 MPH in reverse , missed the ramps and smashed into the
sides of the truck .
Once again , this car was fixed and sold as new .
Just goes to show you that although these things don't usually happen ,
they do from time to time .
