I know for a fact that the gasoline running through the pump acts as a
lubricant and a way to "cool" the pump. As long as there is gas flowing
through the pump than it will be ok. It doesnt matter how much fuel is
in the tank just never run it dry.

BTW gasoline also act as a lubricant to the fuel pum,p so I have been
told by
various mechanics where I work that its bad to let the gas to below 1/4
tank
