Police like to intimidate folks into behaving the way they feel is correct regardless of the law. Go to your local library or state motor vehicle department and read the law regarding the violation cited on the ticket, if you received one. Most likely it says that the exhaust system must extend beyond the end of the "passenger compartment". I get the impression yours does in its current form.

If you got a ticket go to the police station with the vehicle and ask to speak to someone who can inspect the vehicle. They should inspect the exhaust and, most likely, admit their mistake. Be sure you write the Police Chief and let him know you are not happy with the officers lack of training or disregard of the law.

I hope this helps.
