Now I'm replying to myself... ;-)

I found answers to some of my questions at www.richmondgear.com. They've
got dimensions for their various trannies, and the optional gear ratios,
etc.

The first thing I noticed is that Richmond appears to be
Mopar-pathic, just like most of the aftermarket manufacturers... ;-)
Why? Well, Ford and GM get a tranny with a .49 through .62
sixth gear, but the Mopar and AMC version is a pathetic
.76-.91. Heck, my stock NV-3500's *5th* gear has their 6th beat
with a .729 ratio!! No way can I justify this swap without a
significantly lower overdrive gear than I've got now! :-(

Granted, there may be some technical reason for this huge
disparity, but if I were the paranoid type, I'd think that most
of the aftermarket places are giving Ferd and GM all the breaks
and tryin' to slow us down... :-)

I'm currently hoping that I can use one of the "better" versions
of the tranny and do a "generic" install. It appears to be
set up for a basically universal installation, although they do have
versions that will bolt right in to a Mustang, GM F-body, GM
truck, almost any vehicle on the planet except Dakotas... (oops,
sorry, there goes Mr. Paranoid again!) ;-)

I was going to write to them and ask about this, but I think
I'll wait until the guy who knows this stuff gets back from
vacation, and also to see what Jack finds out.

   Richmond's factory is in Liberty, SC, only 50 miles from Spartanburg;
maybe I should go to the Spartanburg DML meet with a little detour to
Liberty? Hmmm... :-)
