A half shaft is sorta like a driveshaft. On a solid axle rear, there is
an axle that connects the carrier (ring gear, etc.) to the wheels. On
something with an independent suspension a half-shaft (think miniture
driveshaft)connects the carrier to the wheels. The half shafts allow
the wheel to move independent of one another.
That help?
