High octane BAD. The purpose of octane is to PREVENT combustion, which,
in an unmodified, low-compression like ours, results in a slow burn,
incomplete combustion, and possibly backfires. Less power is a definate,
but the AMOUNT of power loss will vary from engine to engine, even if all
are stock. The reason your Corvettes, Vipers, etc require high octane is
because they are higher compression and produce more heat, which would
cause lower octane gas to ignite prematurely (ping). General rule of
thumb, run the lowest octane gasoline that does not make your engine ping.
The idea that upper-level gas is cleaner is hogwash. Put in a bottle of
fuel system treatment ($.79/bottle) every 10 tanks or so if you're
worried, and you'll save a ton of money over paying for top-grade gas.
