I read in an online review that the only difference betwwen the two is that
the 44RE is a wide ratio version of the 46RE.
The following ratios were listed for the 44RE and the 46RH numbers are from my
92 FSM.
44RE 46RH
1st: 2.74:1 2.45:1
2nd: 1.54:1 1.54:1
3rd: 1.00:1 1.00:1
4th: 0.69:1 0.69:1
I am not sure what effect the first gear ratio change woud have on measured
rear wheel HP. I have never been on a DYno before, so I don't know what the
procdure is for measuring peak rear wheel HP (what gear is it done in, etc.),
but since HP is directly proportional to torque and rpm, then a ratio change
should not make a difference. HP output = HP input - losses. Because
torque is multiplied by ratio, and speed is divided by ratio, ratio is not in
the equation.
I know from reading my service manual (92) that the V6 came with a 42RH
(Hydraulic vs. Electronic) and the V8 came with the 46RH. From the service
manual specification, the only difference in the 42 vs. 46 was number of
clutch disks, and the first and second gear ratios. I have never figured out
the exact correlation between the A500/A518 numbers, and the 42/46RH/E
numbers, but I always assumed that the A518 was the 46RH/E and the A500 was
the 42RH/E. But, this leaves the 44RE without an Axxx number.
