I think that it depends on the application. I am looking at the K&N "FIPK"
kit. Looking at the pictures in their ads, the kit looks like they use an
adapter bolted to the top of the TB, a long inlet tube with an open element
cone-type filter at the end. However, not all applications are engineered as
such. The FIPK for my engine, 1993 V6, is simply a round air filter which
mounts atop the TB. The theory being, " a big gulp of warm air is better
than a sip of cold". I really wish it had the cone type filter setup. I have
a hard time justifying spending over $100 for just an air filter.
