I run with the Gibson dual 2.5" rear exit cat-back (since spring of '97)
and the Mike Leach headers (since spring of '99) on my Dakota.
Back in early '97, Gibson and Borla were the only companies putting
out dual rear exits. I chose the aluminized Gibson because it was
less expensive than the Borla and there was a Gibson Canadian distributor
nearby. At that time, Gibson did not have exhause tips nor headers for
their systems and, during the install, I had stainless steel Megs tips put
on.
I chose the MP headers because, from past experiences with headers,
I felt that they would be the best fit and I had read that their design
was best suited for the magnum engine. I bought from Mike Leach
because of the DML group buy and the fact that the MP headers are
chrome-plated. With the Leach headers, I had the option of
nickel-plated or ceramic-coated.
The installation of the Gibson calls for a cut to made on the pipe
between the stock muffer and the cat. This is so that their muffler
can be properly angled so that the back pipes can be aligned with stock
hangers. The Leach (MP) headers also require a similar type of cut
but in front of the cat. I would recommend that, if at all possible,
get the Leach headers and the Gibson at the same time so that length
and angle adjustments can be done at one time. When I put the headers
on, it pushed the Gibson exhause system backwards approximately 1/2".
I'll make the re-adjustment this winter.
The Gibson has a low rumble sound but is not loud in the cab. It relieves
back-pressure, gives better throttle response and takes away very little
low end torque. The headers add a little to the exhaust sound, improve
the throttle response, and increase hp (approximately 1.5-2.0 sec. off my
1/4-mi. et) and moves the power band up a little on the rpm scale (about
300 rpms).
I am quite satisfied with these two performance items. They fit in well
with the package of mods that I have embarked upon to reach an e.t. goal
that I have set. Just as importantly, they are street and emission legal,
as are my other mods.
