>here's my question: when they repair something like this do they always
use some kind of body filler or is there a way to repair the metal back
to the original shape without any kind of goop? i would hate to have to
replace the bed, but the truck is only 6 months old. i've never really
had any kind of accident before, so i a unfamiliar with how they do the
repairs. any enlightenment would be greatly appreciated.<

In general, there will always be some filler required to complete the repair.
This does not mean that the entire depression will be filled in with bondo.
The correct method is to hammer and dolly the metal as close as possible back
to the original shape, and then use filler very sparingly just to regain the
smoothness which was present before the repair. The thickness of the filler
should not exceed 1/8" at any position after the repair is complete. In some
rare instances, no filler will be required, if the dent is able to be
"popped" back into place with no distortion of the panel whatsoever. It
sounds like sideswiping a pole would probably be serious enough for entire
panel replacement on a truck which is only 6 mos. old.
