I finally found a real cold air intake for my truck, and I thought I'd pass
the info along. Made by Intense Performance in Washington state, these
aren't a K&N FIPK II or other style that ends up pulling warm underhood air
in, but instead goes through the flap next to the radiator to get real
cold, ram air. They're roughly the same price as the K&N. I've spoken
with a couple of Durango owners who really like these. Here is an address
to see it installed on a Durango.

I don't think it will actually link from here (stupid Lotus Notes), but
just copy and paste into your browser. I contacted the owner of Intense
performance regarding some technical questions I had and the possiblity for
a group buy, and here is what he had to say.

Eric
Thanks for the interest in the Stage III intakes.
Yes, Mine is the only true cold air intake. The K&N and MOPAR (same thing)
both
source their air from the left fron inner fender and use a shield. While
the
shield is great in helping to reduce the underhood grime if you look close
the
main source of air to the inner fender is actually a hole behind the PCM
from
the engine compartment.
As you are probably aware I am a Durango guy and to my knowledge have sold
all
of my intakes to date to Durango folks. My intakes should fit the Dakota's
with
no problem with a possible exception of some differences in the A/C line if
present. It should work on the V6 as well but would probably require a
different
support strap due to the tube being positioned in the engine compartment
differently. More than happy though to work with anyone who purchases for a
Dakota and has a fit problem. I just need to forwarn that I have not
actually
tried each combination.
The inlet is up beside the radiator and requires a hole be cut in the
rubber
like material. The inlet is PVC plastic and bolts to the frame.
Rain, car washes, etc have not been a problem. I live in Seattle and can
arrest
to the rain bit. :-) I do recommend, and supply a warning with the product,
that
if offroad use such that would expose the vehicle to stream crossings, big
mud
puddles, etc, that the inlet flex hose be disconnected from the ffilter
canister.
I am hesitant to offer a "group buy" because I discount the price so much
to
begin with, but I would like to get more exposure on the DML. I would be
willing
to offer a group buy discount of free shipping for a defined period of say
a
month and would also require that my business be added to the DML list of
suppliers. A simple mention of the DML group buy in comment field when
online
ordering would be all that would be necessary for the free shipping.
Let me know if this sounds ok to you and we can work out any further
details.
Again, For those applications where the product has not actually been
installed
I am happy to work with folks in making changes or modifying so that any
potential problems are resolved. Just need to make that clear before hand.
Thanks Again!

So, unless someone can come up with a reason that these wouldn't be better
than K&N FIPK II, I'll be ordering one of these for roughly the same price.
Here's the web addy if you'd like to check it out.
