My 97 V6 has been prone to the intermittent stall problem,
but it seemed to suddenly fix itself a couple weeks ago. No
more stall problems at all. In fact, it seemed to idle a
bit faster, and I also noticed that when I'd goose the
throttle, it would stay revved up for several seconds before
dropping back down.
Well, I changed my oil over the weekend, and I noticed a loud
hissing sound while letting it warm up. A quick inspection
discovered a quite prominent vacuum leak. On the passenger
side of the intake manifold, below and behind the PCV hose,
there is a metal nipple sticking out of the manifold that is
supposed to have a stopper covering it. The rubber stopper
had fallen off, which opened up an enormous vacuum leak. I
slowly covered up the opening, and the engine dropped back down
to its normal idle speed (and eventually stumbled and stalled
like it used to lol). I found the rubber piece laying there by
the fuel rail, and I put it back on the nipple but the thing
seems like it's about 2 sizes too big - it fell right back off.
It will stay on with the engine running, because the vacuum
keeps it in place. But with the engine off, there's nothing
to keep it from coming off. So I had to use a wire tie to make
sure the thing won't fall back off.
Anyone else have this happen? Is this rubber piece supposed to
have an extremely loose fit on the manifold? I just thought it
to be kinda strange.
