Dakota Overhead Computer MPG Discrepancy
                Comments:
                ---------
Over the course of my ownership of my 2001 Dakota I've noticed that the
overhead computer MPG is considerably optimistic. I've tracked mileage over
the last 7500 miles and consistently get 80% to 85% of the mileage indicated.
I'd be happy to attach a spreadsheet to help if possible. I've been told by my
dealer that this cannot be adjusted or compensated for. For an additional
$385, I'd expect the overhead computer to be accurate to some reasonable
degree. Is there any way to adjust the readout through the DRB III scantool or
anything else? The problem is very repeatable and never deviates from the 80%
to 85% window.

Dear Crit:

Thank you for your e-mail concerning the fuel economy of your DaimlerChrysler
product.

The fuel usage estimates quoted for your vehicle were obtained by the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency during their emissions certification testing.
Each vehicle is tested by professional drivers under precisely controlled
laboratory conditions.

The mileage figures obtained by the Environmental Protection Agency should be
considered as estimates to be used only for comparison purposes. The actual
mileage you can expect depends on the individual driving habits of the person
using the vehicle, the conditions under which it is driven, and the vehicle's
mechanical condition.

If, after considering all of the factors involved, you still feel that your
vehicle is not operating to its full potential, we suggest you arrange for your
authorized Chrysler Corporation dealer to perform another detailed check of your
vehicle.
