Tom, I know an easy way to find out a little more info- go to a local dealer
and find an R/T(46RE tranny) or a 360 2wd QC(46RE tranny), and a V6 2wd
auto(42RE). Bring a tape measure, pen and pad. Look under the trucks and
measure the physical dimensions of the tranny, the length from engine to
crossmember/mount, etc. Take notes and compare the critical dimensions. I
can tell you that some Gen-II 4x4 318 trucks were equipped with an A518
tranny,so it will physically go under the floorpan and stuff. I'm just not
for sure about crossmember placement and mounts. Have you talked to Phoenix
Transmissions in Weatherford, TX? They offer several different stages/levels
of built A500/A518 trannies. Check it out over at
http://www.phoenixtrans.com I have heard good things about their 700-R4's,
many people like the trannies they have had built there. HTH,

Mark,

Any idea what kinds of modifications I'd have to make to go from the A500 to
the A518?

Later,
Tom "Slick"
