I had this same problem when I put a 4" suspension lift on my '92 Ram...
Just trying to remember how I fixed it! :-) I *think* what the problem
was is that electrical connector to the front diff can be plugged in
either way (i.e. its not keyed). I had it plugged in backwards. I
don't know if that applies to your Dak or not, but it might be worth
having a look. Also look around that area to be sure there aren't any
loose, cracked, or disconnected vacuum hoses.
If that's not it, you might want to verify that the electrical connection
is still OK, that it didn't get pinched or severed during the engine swap.
Another wild shot in the dark... When you were testing, did you just
move the transfer case lever, or did you actually move the truck? With
my Ram, I will usually have to drive several feet after shifting from
2wd to 4hi or back, before the 4wd indicator light will come on or turn
off.
