I would agree with Bill (SEMIHEMI01) however, you did mention the
possibility of it being left out in the rain sans the hood. If water was
allowed to fall on the PCM with no cover....you're probably going to have to
get a new one. A quick scanner check by a dealer should tell you pretty
quick. The other reason I would be suspicious of the PCM: you said they had
to jump it at least twice a day to move it. All someone has to do is but
the jumpers on wrong and your PCM is toast. One quick way to check is to
look in your PDU and see if the fusible links look new like someone may have
replaced them lately. Again, with rain coming down, if your engine wasn't
protected it's going to be fun trying to figure where water and condensation
ended up rolling to. You definitely have a ground or short problem.

Good idea with the eraser, I should have thought of that.

The hood was off because it broke off, but there is no proof of them leaving
it out at night, or I would take it to them and shove a bill in their face.
They say the pulled it in EVERY night... BS. Though there still would be a
dust and condensation problem eh?

Does everyone rule out the voltage regulator in the ECU?

What about the fusible link in the wiring harness that goes from the alt, to
the relay box, to the battery terminal.

Thanks,

: Geoff,
: I'm betting you have a corrosion problem on an electrical connection.
I
: suspect it's on a ground somewhere. Check the ground cable to the block,
: Block to the body. Leaving it out in the rain with the hood off is the
: responsibility of the body shop. Try confronting them with solving the
: problem. Leaving the cop counter & the gauge on is what killed the Optima.
: Unless there is some extenuating circumstances I'd hold them responsible
for
: this problem.
: The best way to clean the contact pins on relays is with a pencil
eraser,
: it will polish the metal without leaving grit behind. Bill
