      When I started working on jet aircraft, we were burning JP-4 which
has similar properties to diesel but as you said, a different specific
gravity. When I retired from active duty we were burning JP-8 which is
almost the same as JP-4 but is less likely to flash when exposed to an
ignition source. Either way, we were supposed to refer to the applicable
Technical Order (T.O.) for the proper conversion multiplier for the type
fuel were we pumping. The 6.5 is a general rule of thumb only. And before
everybody starts getting upset at us for going off and starting up about
airplanes again, maybe we better give it a rest. ;)
