A better question would be "has anyone not had a ping problem with a
318?" It's a very common issue in Gen3 Daks.

| Mine has started to ping a bit under load, especially when
| I put my foot into it. It seems to do it more regularly
| when the engine is warm. I tried putting through some 93
| octane fuel, and it seems to clear it up, but it doesn't
| seem to have any power with the higher octane fuel. The
| only mod I have is a K&N FIPK.
|
| My guess is the timing.
|
| My truck is a 97 318 X-cab 4X4 auto.
|
| If it is the timing, is it possible for the timing to
| advance on its own like that? Just thinking out loud.
|
| If you have any suggestions, or similar experiences,
| including cures, they would be greatly appreciated.

Dodge has a new PCM program that will retard the timing 4 degrees, which
is supposed to fix it. Other fixes include rerouting the spark plug
wires, running a cooler (180 degree) thermostat, running cooler spark
plugs, and checking the intake manifold gasket (also known as the "belly
pan" for leaks, as it's very prone to failure.
