SBEC Failure

I will try to be as brief as I can. - I have a 1992 Dakota 4X4 with 5.2
V8 and 3.90 gears. On Tuesday 11/27 we returned from a
camping trip. First time I had towed our new fifth wheel trailer.
I estimate the truck trailer combo is close to the 10,500# CGVW
for this vechile, a good load but not excessive. I intend to get it
weighted soon so I will know for sure.

THE PROBLEM - after considerable maneuvering back and forth
to get the trailer into my driveway, I thought I had it where it was
supposed to be, and I shut the truck off. Before I unhitched, I
decided the trailer wasn't exactly where I wanted it. I tried to
restart the truck, it would start but acted like it was starving for
fuel and would stumble along and finally die, it would not accept
the throttle and would die instantly if throttle was applied. I made
several attempts, each time it would start but would not run.

I replaced the stock SBEC unit with a MP SBEC performance
unit that I have, the vehicle started and ran great. Therefore,
I assume I had a defective Stock SBEC and that is why it
wouldn't run. The truck was not running hot, the transmission
temperature was approx. 160 degrees and the engine
compartment wasn't excessively hot. However, the stock
SBEC when I removed it was very warm to the touch but
not so hot that you couldn't hold it in your hand.

Before going to the dealer for warranty replacement of the stock
unit, I decided to reinstall the stock SBEC to confirm that it was the
problem. As you can guess, it starts and runs just great with the
original stock SBEC.

The Haynes manual tells me that 92 Dakota with the 5.2 V8 has
an electric fuel pump in the gas tank, doesn't that rule out vapor
lock??? Any ideas ????

I read somewhere that the MP SBEC performance unit is unsuitable
for towing!!! Can anyone tell me why???
